Navadurga Swaroop

Navadurga is the nine Swaroop of Devi Parvati, also known as Navadurga. First Swaroop’s name is Shailaputri; second Swaroop’s name is Brahmacharini; third is known as Chandraghanta; fourth as Kushmanda; fifth is known as Skandamata; sixth is known as Katyayani; seventh is known as Kaalratri; eighth is known as Mahagauri; and ninth is known as Siddhidatri.

Shailaputri

Shailaputri is the first Swaroop of Navadurga. Shaila means mountain, and Putri implies daughter. She is the daughter of Himalaya Raj. Shailaputri’s favorite color is Royal Blue, and her favorite flowers are Gudhal and Jasmine. She has two hands: in one hand she carries a trident and in the second hand lotus. She rides on Nandi. Navarati’s first days belong to Shailaputri.

Brahmacharini

Brahmacharini is the second Swaroop of Navadurga. Devi Parvati has done 1000 years of tapasya to get married to Lord Shiva. She also did strong tapasya, which only ate fruits and water. But later she starts eating Bela Patra only. She was born in a palace, but she stayed away from the palace and her family, doing tapasya in the forest and sleeping on the floor. Lord Shiva, please on Devi Parvati and give a boon. She has two hands; one hand holds Japa Mala and the other hand is Kamandal pavitra Jaal. She wears a white sari her color is Yellow, and the flower is jasmine and gudhal. Navarati’s second days belong to Brahmacharini.

Chandraghanta

Chandraghanta is the third Swaroop of Navadurga. She is Ugra Swaroop; her one leg is always ready to fight evil forces. She has ten hands and carries Gada, Trishul, Kamandal, Sword, Varada Mudra, Lotus flower, Arrow, Dhanush, Japa Mala, and Abhaya Mudra. Her vehicle is a lion; she wears a semi-circular moon; on her forehead, it looks like a bell; that is why her name is Chandraghanta. Her color is green, and the flowers are gudhal and jasmine. Navarati’s third belongs to Chandraghanta.

Kushmanda

Kushmanda is the fourth Swaroop of Navadurga. With one smile, she has created the whole universe. She can only live inside the sun. She brings light into the universe by producing the cosmic egg. The means of Kushmanda are Ku, which means “a little,” Ushma, which means energy, and Anda, which means “cosmic egg.” She is known as Kushmanda. Kushmanda Devi, having eight hands, carries a trident, sword, hook, discus, mace, bow, arrow, and two jars of honey & blood. Her favorite flower is red gudhal and her color is Grey. On Navarati, four days belong to Kushmanda.

Skandamata

Skandamata is the fifth Swaroop of Navadurga. Devi has four hands and carries a lotus on both upper hands; one she carries her son Skanda on her lap and Abhay Mudra on the other hand. Skhand is known as Kartikeya; that’s why she is known as Skandamata. She sits on the lion. Her favorite flower is the red gudhal, and her color is orange. On Navarati, the fifth days belong to Skandamata.

Katyayani

Katyayani is the sixth Swaroop of Navadurga. She is also known as Mahishasura Mardini. Devi Katyayani was born in Rishi Katya; that’s why her name is Katyayani. She has four hands in one hand; she carries a sword and a lotus in her left hand, and Abhaya and Varada Mudras in her right hand. On Navarati’s sixth day belongs Katyayani. She sits on the lion. Her favorite flower is the red gudhal, and her color is white.

Kaalratri

Kaalrati is the seventh Swaroop of Navadurga. She is Ugra Swaroop; she removes darkness and negative effects. She has four hands: one hand Abhaya Mudra, the second hand Varada Mudra, and the other hand deadly iron hook and sword. Her skin color is dark blue; her vehicle is a donkey. Kaalratri has been mentioned in a lot of Puranas. Her favorite flower is the red gudhal and her color is red. On Navarati seventh day belongs to Kaalratri

Mahagauri

Mahagauri is the eighth Swaroop of Navadurga. She has four hands in one hand with Trishul, the second hand with Abhaya Mudra, the other hand with Damaru, and four hands with Varada Mudra Nandi in her vehicle. Her favorite flower is the red gudhal and her color is sky blue. On Navarati eighth day belongs to Mahagauri.

Siddhidartri

Siddhidatri is the ninth Swaroop of Navadurga. She bestows her devotees with astha siddhi. She has four hands and carries Gada, Cakra, Lotus, and Sankh. Dev, Gandharva, Yaksha, Raksha, and Asura worship Siddhidatri for Siddhi. On Navarati ninth day belongs to Navadurga. Her favorite flower is the red gudhal, and her color is pink.
